Special Event May 7th 2011

As a kick off event for the WTJU Spring Fundraiser, there will be a Virginia premiere of the documentary movie Sounds Like A Revolution at Random Row Bookstore on Main Street in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday May 7th at 8pm (doors open at 7:30pm). Admission is $5
Sounds Like a Revolution is a feature documentary about a whole new generation of activist musicians who are living proof that music is an important and powerful tool in the ongoing struggle for social change.

Check out these videos which talk about the movie:

"...The film is educational, entertaining, and full of moments that will leave music fans in awe (hearing Crosby talk about sitting beside Neil Young as he wrote "Ohio", his song about the shootings at Kent State on May 4, 1970, is so powerful that it gave me goosebumps)."

WTJU's 2011 Folk Marathon Fundraiser is coming!

splashTune in and pledge to the WTJU Folk Marathon fundraiser coming up Monday May 9th through Sunday May 15th. The schedule can be found here ... loads of really great special programming put together by WTJU Djs for your listening pleasure, and all to raise money for our favorite radio station.

We recently 'aired' a moment of silence to draw attention to the fact that it is all too easy for college-based radio stations to be sold off by their parent institutions in the guise of realizing short-term financial gain. We have to prove that the way we operate, non-commercially, with DJ- and listener-driven programming is a viable way forward, and the best way to do that is by listeners stepping forward with financial support.

If you can't listen in at the time the shows are aired, you can always listen in on the tape vault, where shows are saved for two weeks, so go ahead and indulge yourself!

Marathon highlights:
Tues May 10th 5-7pm: Freedom Songs
Wed May 11th 9-noon: Solas' 15th anniversary
Fri May 13th 5-7pm: Sunset Road Live Albums Special
Sun May 15th 4-7pm: Hope for Ariang benefit concert featuring Dervish and Lunasa (recorded at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville 3/25/11)

...but then, i'm biased as i'm involved in all those shows!

Go ahead and show us some love, and
thank you!

Early Bluegrass History on Leftover Biscuits...

Grant Colby

Tune in this Saturday morning, April 9, from 6:30-8:00 when bluegrass historian Grant Colby sits in with Peter on Leftover Biscuits.

Colby, also a fine musician, will pick out almost nothing but "B Sides", and talk about some of the sidemen who backed everyone from Bill Monroe to Flatt & Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers, and Jimmy Martin, to name just a few.

The Grass will never be more Blue than on this Saturday's Leftover Biscuits.
