      Pirate radio

It was pirate radio in the UK that first got me interested in broadcasting. Here's a movie about pirate radio in the USA:

HERE is a link to the website about that movie.

HERE is the official website for the commercial movie release by Richard Curtis

And HERE is the website for

Caroline Logo, the legendary offshore radio station, (and still broadcasting via the internet,) which sparked my interest in the first place back in 1963.

Domestic bluegrass sidemen replaced with more economical Chinese imports
Citing the “financial realities of a globalized economy," mandolinist John Reischman defended his decision to use less expensive Chinese substitutes for his usual American sidemen. Said Reischman, “The consumer really can’t tell the difference, and the savings are huge.”

Reggae Vibes' Goldfinger and Leftover Biscuits' Emmet were in it for the whole station too, and were on hand to take pledges of support.  A very big THANK YOU to Adventure Music for providing us with cd gifts for our supporters!

      Free music archive

Free form radio station WFMU started the Free Music Archive back in 2007 as a curated library of freely downloadable audio & musicIt has just received a major grant from the John D & Catherine T MacArthur foundation. I especially liked the Old-time/historic section. Well worth checking out, as there's probably something for everyone.

      WTJU Jazz marathon October 11th-17th

      Bitches Brew

This past summer there was a tremendous effort put out to save WTJU in all its diversity from the threat of a wholesale change in the format of the station, with huge and vocal community support for free form, DJ driven programming. The result was a reprieve and a chance for the station to make a go of it in its current form, but the reality is it is only a reprieve. The university *requires* that the station increase student participation, listenership and revenue. Now is the time to work on #3 on that list...the upcoming jazz marathon gives you, dear reader, your first opportunity to 'put your money where your mouth is'. It doesn't matter if jazz isn't your first listening priority (however, look at the diversity of 'jazz' on WTJU!), but consider this: a strong showing in the station's first fundraiser following the summer brouhaha will go a long way in helping keep the wolf from the door. The goal for the fundraiser is $40,000.....go here to find out all about the fundraiser, go here to donate (and tell them the folk blog sent you...), go here to volunteer to help out with the fundraiser. Above all, please do something to help!

      Thanks
      Pete M
